Mortuary Aviary
2026
Mortuary Aviary: A Community Coexistence Hub reimagines the former Coroner’s Court and Mortuary in Ladywell as a shared ecological and community space for both people and birds. The project transforms the historically sensitive site into a multi-functional environment that combines archive reading spaces, natural education rooms, bird observation platforms, and social gathering areas. Inspired by the coexistence between urban wildlife and local residents, the design introduces lightweight timber frames, modular bird nests, and layered circulation routes that create visual openness while supporting privacy and reflection. By preserving elements of the original architecture and integrating ecological systems into the building, the proposal explores how adaptive reuse can reconnect communities with nature, memory, and everyday social interaction within an evolving urban environment.
